What is a transparent PNG?

A transparent PNG is an image file that stores more than red, green, and blue color. It also has an alpha channel, an extra value for every pixel that says how opaque that pixel is. A value of fully opaque shows the color, fully transparent shows whatever is behind the image, and values in between create smooth, soft edges. That is why a transparent Cutout can sit cleanly on a website, slide, or poster.

When you need a transparent background

  • Logos and icons that must sit on different colored backgrounds.
  • Product photos placed on branded or colored layouts.
  • Presentation slides, thumbnails, and social graphics.
  • Design composites where a subject is layered into a new scene.
  • Stickers, print mockups, and overlays.

Tips for a clean transparent PNG

Start from the best Original you have: a sharp, well-lit photo where the subject contrasts with the background gives the cleanest edges. After the Removal, check fine details such as hair, fur and glass against a dark and a light backdrop to spot halos. If an edge looks rough, try a larger or sharper Original and run the Removal again. Keep the file as PNG while you work, and only convert a copy to another format at the very end.

PNG compared with other formats

JPG does not support transparency at all, so any cleared area becomes a solid color, often white. PNG supports full alpha transparency and keeps edges crisp, though files are usually larger than JPG. WebP also supports transparency and can be smaller, but some older tools and upload forms still expect PNG. This tool outputs PNG for the widest compatibility. For a closer comparison, read PNG vs WebP for transparent images. To make the transparent PNG smaller for a website, convert it with PNG to WebP, which keeps the transparency.

How to make a transparent background step by step

  • Choose an Original image in JPG, PNG, or WebP format, up to 15MB and 4096 pixels per side.
  • Drop it onto the upload area above or select it from your device.
  • Wait while the Removal runs in your browser using WebAssembly. The first run can take longer while the model loads.
  • Check the Cutout on the preview. A checkerboard pattern or colored backdrop shows which areas are transparent.
  • Download the transparent PNG. Keep it as PNG, because saving as JPG will fill the transparent area again.

Keep it transparent

Many apps flatten images when you export. In design tools, choose PNG and make sure any background layer is hidden. When uploading to a website, check that the platform does not convert your file to JPG. If a background looks solid after upload, that conversion is the likely cause. The tool is free, needs no signup, and adds no watermark.
