Specification tips
  • •Use consistent framing dimensions across your product collections.
  • •Preview cutouts on both dark and light store backgrounds before publishing.
  • •Decide on a standard canvas, margin and shadow before you start on the catalog.

Why backgrounds matter for an online store

Shoppers cannot touch your products, so photos carry the whole decision. When one listing shows a product on a kitchen counter and the next shows it on a carpet, the collection page looks like a pile of unrelated images instead of a shop. A consistent background makes prices, titles and product shapes easier to compare, and it signals that the store pays attention to detail.

Uniform photography also makes redesigns easier. If every product exists as a Cutout, changing your theme color, running a seasonal promotion or building a new landing page does not require a new photoshoot. You simply place the same Cutouts on a new backdrop.

Workflow: from Original to Cutout

Collect your Originals in one folder and keep them as JPG, PNG or WebP files under 15MB and 4096px per side. Open the tool, upload one Original, and let the Removal run in your browser. When the Cutout appears, inspect it with the before and after slider and the preview backdrops, then download the transparent PNG.

Name each file clearly, for example with the product name and variant, so you can find it later. Repeat for the rest of the range. Because there is no signup and no watermark, you can work through a catalog without setting anything up first.

Common mistakes

Stores often mix photo styles from different suppliers and then try to fix everything after the fact. It is better to decide on a standard before you start: canvas shape, product position, margin and shadow. Another mistake is using heavily compressed Originals, which add blocky artifacts around the edge that carry over into the Cutout.

A third mistake is exporting the transparent PNG and uploading it directly to a store that expects a flat image. Some platforms and themes handle transparency differently, so test one product on the live theme before you convert the whole catalog.

Tips for better edges

Photograph products on a plain, evenly lit surface in a contrasting color. Keep the camera at the same distance for similar items so the scale looks consistent. Avoid motion blur and check that the product is in focus, since a soft edge in the Original becomes a soft edge in the Cutout.

After the Removal, zoom in on areas where product and surface meet, such as the base of a bottle or the underside of a shoe. These are the spots where leftover background most often hides.

What to do after the Removal

Place the Cutout on your store backdrop, add a consistent soft shadow, and export at the size your theme needs. Keep the transparent PNG as a master file and generate flattened versions from it when a channel requires a solid background. Preview the result on both light and dark sections of your theme, and on a phone, since many shoppers browse there.
