Why Clean Backgrounds Matter for Handmade & Vintage
Etsy buyers scroll through dozens of competing items in search results. Cluttered backgrounds distract buyers from noticing the craftsmanship of your products.
- •Take photos with natural lighting near a window for realistic textures.
- •Use our before/after slider to verify fine details like chains and earrings.
- •Photograph jewelry so chain links and gaps are visible against a contrasting surface.
Why backgrounds matter on Etsy
Etsy search results show many small thumbnails side by side. A buyer decides in a moment whether to click, so the first image needs to read clearly at a small size. A cluttered workbench, a patterned tablecloth or a crowded shelf can hide the shape and texture that make your item special.
Removing the background does not mean making the photo sterile. A clean Cutout lets you choose a backdrop that suits your brand, such as warm paper, linen or a soft solid color, instead of whatever happened to be behind the piece.
Workflow: from Original to Cutout
Take your photo near a window and upload the Original in JPG, PNG or WebP format. Keep it under 15MB and 4096px per side. Run the Removal in your browser and use the before and after slider to check delicate parts such as chains, loops, tassels and thin handles.
Preview the Cutout on a white and a dark backdrop. Light-colored items often show dark fringes on white, while dark items can show light halos. When it looks right, download the transparent PNG and place it on the backdrop you prefer.
Common mistakes
Handmade items often have fine, irregular or semi-transparent details, and those are the hardest to separate. A common mistake is shooting jewelry on a busy surface where chain links disappear into the pattern. Another is using a very shallow depth of field, so parts of the item are blurry before the Removal even starts.
Sellers also sometimes over-edit, applying heavy filters that change the color of the product. Buyers notice when the photo does not match what arrives, so keep colors faithful.
Tips for better edges
Shoot against a plain, contrasting surface in natural light. For jewelry, hang or lay pieces so links and gaps are visible. For glass or ceramics, avoid reflections of windows on the edge. Take several shots and pick the sharpest.
After the Removal, zoom in on the most delicate part of the item. If the Cutout loses a thin strap or a chain link, try another Original or a different surface color and run the Removal again.
What to do after the Removal
Place the Cutout on a clean backdrop, keep margins consistent across your shop, and add a gentle shadow so the item looks grounded. Use the same style for every listing to give your shop a recognizable look. Before uploading, check the current Etsy photo requirements for size and format, and keep the transparent PNG for banners, social posts and packaging inserts.
