What converting to PNG can and can't do
PNG is lossless, so the file won't lose any more quality each time you edit and save it. Converting can't undo compression that already happened in the JPG, though, and it doesn't make the background transparent.
For a transparent background, remove it with the background remover, which saves a transparent PNG directly.
